Tampa Bay’s Gulf beaches face west, which makes them some of the best places in Florida for sunset photos. The trick is timing. Here is how to plan a beach session around golden hour.
What Golden Hour Means
Golden hour is roughly the last hour before sunset, when the sun is low and the light turns warm and soft. Most beach photographers in Tampa Bay start sessions about 60 to 90 minutes before sunset and finish as the sun touches the water.
Approximate Sunset Times by Month
These are rounded, mid-month times for the Tampa Bay area. Check the exact time for your date when you book.
- January: around 6:00 PM
- March (after the time change): around 7:40 PM
- June: around 8:25 PM
- September: around 7:35 PM
- November (after the time change): around 5:40 PM
- December: around 5:40 PM
Weather and the Summer Storm Pattern
From May to September, storms often build in the afternoon and clear by early evening, which can leave dramatic skies at sunset. Still, agree on a backup date with your photographer before the session.
Crowds, Tides and Wind
- Crowds: Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach are busy on weekends and holidays. Weeknights or quieter stretches of sand make it easier to get clean backgrounds.
- Tides: Low tide can expose wet, reflective sand that looks beautiful in photos.
- Wind: A breeze is great for flowing dresses but hard on hair. Bring a few pins and a brush.
Permits and Parking
Some parks charge entry or parking, and some require a permit for professional photography. Your photographer should know the rules for the beach you choose. Ask before the day.
